Adenoidectomy in Children: What Parents Should Know

Adenoidectomy is a common procedure to remove the adenoids, small glands located at the back of the nose. In children, enlarged adenoids can cause a range of issues, including persistent nasal congestion, difficulty breathing through the nose, snoring, and frequent ear infections. These problems can significantly affect your child’s quality of life, including sleep, eating, and speech development.

If your child experiences chronic nasal congestion, ear infections, or sleep problems such as snoring or mouth breathing, it may be time to consult an ENT specialist. Adenoidectomy is often recommended when symptoms do not improve with other treatments, like medication or nasal sprays.

The procedure is typically straightforward, with most children recovering within a week. It is usually done under general anaesthesia, and children can return to normal activities after a short recovery period. Risks are minimal but can include bleeding or infection, which can be discussed with your ENT consultant before surgery.

Adenoidectomy can significantly improve breathing, reduce ear infections, and promote better sleep, giving your child a better overall quality of life. If you're concerned about your child’s symptoms, speaking to an ENT specialist can help you determine the best treatment options.
