Ear Wax Management: What You Need to Know

Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural substance produced by the body to protect the ear canal. While it usually works its way out naturally, sometimes it can build up and cause discomfort, hearing loss, or even infections.

Symptoms of a blocked ear include:

- Reduced hearing

- Ear pain or discomfort

- Itching or a feeling of fullness in the ear

- Tinnitus (ringing in the ear)

- A cough (sometimes linked to ear wax pressure)

Managing ear wax at home:

- Ear drops: Over-the-counter drops can help soften wax, making it easier to remove.

- Avoid cotton buds: Using cotton buds or other objects can push the wax further in, causing more harm.

When to see an ENT specialist:

If home treatments don’t improve the problem, or if there is any pain, hearing loss, or discharge, it’s important to consult an ENT professional. We can safely remove the wax using specialised instruments or gentle suction.

Regular ear cleaning isn’t necessary for most people, but if your child or you experience blockages, an ENT can help ensure safe and effective management.
